Corgis, wildlife and birds, Oregon, travel, and a smattering of politics from a 50-something dog-grandma.

Who cares, we’re CAMPING

Posted By C-Myste on July 3, 2009

We got a slow start yesterday, with Tom spending several hours doing phone support for a customer who shall remain unnamed. When your computer doesn’t come on, look for the obvious first. Like that the on/off button is a little cockeyed and not making contact with the true switch below it. Do not take the computer over to a work bench and plug it in and see that it still does not have power, not noticing that the breaker is turned off and nothing has power on that outlet. Then especially do not take it apart and remove the battery from the motherboard to check its voltage. Removing the battery from the motherboard will make your computer lose its bios settings and become really stupid.

We lost another 15 minutes when the little switch did not make the trailer lower onto the ball on the hitch. That was just a corroded connection that sandpaper took care of. Both truck and trailer batteries were replaced last week as both were dead.

Then we spent another half-hour stopped along the road helping a second customer with a stuck print-spooler file (actually it turned out to be the print-server).

Then we spent another half-hour in Remote (yes, that’s the real name of the “town”) fixing this:

But looking on the bright side, the loud startling bang happened right in front of an RV resort.

p1020601
Which is for sale if anybody is interested. Around 6 acres, mobile home and rv spots, river frontage, $470k. The owners moved back to Florida (too cold in Oregon!) and the managers are very nice and helpful people.

We didn’t make it into Bandon in time to get dinner at the blue shack, so we tried out Tony’s Crab Shack. Some jerk in a big truck deliberately ran over one of the well-fed seagulls who was trying to cross the road as foot-traffic.

p1020605
Suddenly the sky was filled with the deceased bird’s family. I didn’t pull out my camera quite in time so they were starting to disperse.

And this morning . . . the coffee pot wouldn’t come on! Fortunately Louise and Gary had a pot.

Going to the beach shortly.  With any luck, there won’t be a tsunami warning.

“Must Love Dogs”

Yesterday a little blue and white sign went up in front of the up-the-hill next-door neighbors’ house.
p1020597

They’ve been there quite a while . . . and have never complained about the barking. I hope that whoever buys the place is also dog-friendly. I don’t know about the market for houses on 5 acres with huge greenhouses but no water, though.

p1020598

With any luck the next owners will also hate blackberries and want to murder their half of them. I’d be willing to split the cost of a new fence.

Fixed pedigree

Posted By C-Myste on June 29, 2009

For those who need it, here’s a corrected version of the pedigree from Wally/Hannah’s litter.  Warning to self: proofread after cut and paste.  If you click on the pedigree you should be directed to the pdf that you can save as desired.

Two-dog office

A drama in three acts played out under my desk yesterday.

p1020591Act I: Where Huxley has his chewie and Phoebe thinks very hard.

p1020592Act II: Where Phoebe takes action to remedy the situation.

p1020594Act III: Where Huxley is depressed.

Yes, Phoebe was at the day-job yesterday.  Actually the day started out when I took her to the vet to get spayed.   But before the deed was done, I had some assistance in coming back to sanity.  Or perhaps coming back to insanity.   Phoebe had two litters by Carbon and it does seem a waste not to try something else as well.  She is a lovely girl with an excellent pedigree, and is only about the age that Alice was when she had her Hunter puppies.  So we’re going to give her one more round, with plans for Chase to be the lucky dog.

Look who . . .

. . . it’s Emmy Lou!

Celebrating her birthday with her friends at Mescalaro Care Center

Playing with her ball in the snow.

Emmy, more formally known as C-Myste Sweetheart of the Rodeo UD, now lives in Ruidoso, New Mexico.   The way these strange coincidences seem to happen, Penni ran into Phil at an Albuquerque pet supply shop just recently.

A just a little belated happy birthday to the Sweetheart litter, including Noelle’s Music, Lani’s Maggie, Traum’s sire Quincy, and Pistol, Oscar, and the rest.  For those who don’t know, the litter was a bittersweet one for us.  I lost my “keeper” in the litter, a little girl I truly loved, at 13 months from hyperparathyroidism.  I think now that she must have had a tumor on her thyroid, though I couldn’t bring myself to do a necropsy at the time.  “Sadie” had a 5 point major and placed at the 2000 national specialty in Pennsylvania.

Coming up on Friday

There’s a photo contest, and they don’t have any Cardigan photos on file yet.  I just submitted this picture of Alice:

One of the benefits of the job is that we have a pet-friendly workplace these days.

Happy Father’s Day!

Posted By C-Myste on June 21, 2009

To new father Pilot, who has made his 5-day old kids “champion sired”.

Pie-Pie needed a single point to finish. Mandy and Henry got up in the wee hours of the morning and drove to Montana (following a Moose down the freeway, I hear). Pilot was WD, then BOW over a major in bitches, and BOS over two male specials to finish with a fourth major.

Way to go, Mandy and Pie!

Shore Acres and Cape Arago

Because I can’t go over there and not take pictures.

The sea was much calmer than it was in October. We saw a baby whale playing off the cape, which is one of the best whale-watching points on the west coast. There was also a profusion of sea lions on the rocks who were being very talkative.

Huxley and Molly want to live at the beach. So does Carolyn, at least part of the year. I’ll take the desert in the winter and the Oregon coast in the summer, thank you. But we live in Medford where usually the summer is like the desert and the winter is like the coast. Although so far this summer has been cool and rainy even inland.

Campsite Reconnaissance

No major (count 3-7-1-0 and 3-7-0-0) but it’s about more than the dog show anyway, right?  Mirrhi needs 2 singles; maybe she’ll finish!

Bullards Beach Thursday 7/2/09 to Monday 7/6/09 we have reserved Campsites C19 through C26 except C25 which is a yurt. Click here for a pdf campground map. The even numbers are 50′-51′  long trailer spots, the odd numbers are tent spaces on the inside of the loop. There is lots of tent room and the spaces open onto each other.
